How to indicate tempo change of quarter note = dotted quarter note?
Is this something that can possibly be done in SmartScore? I don't need the midi playback to understand this. I literally just need to be able to type it in either as a tempo adjustment or text insert, and I'm struggling to do either.

It can be done. But I'm not sure how I did it, and I'm trying to recreate my steps. It may take an email to tech support.

Re: How to indicate tempo change of quarter note = dotted quarter note?
I did it too, but the best I can say is "somewhere" with the thought is was in Smartscore. However, it would have been in a pre 64 version.
What I think (emphasis on think) I did was use the character map in Windows to find the characters and then was able to copy them within the charmap app and paste into SS. I may well have just found the codes and entered their decimal codes using Alt-numpad numbers.
Regardless, I can't get that to work since I don't know what font SS64 uses and the program seems to want to convert to regular text. An attempt at the wished for notation using a font that had music symbols ended up with q=qd.
I saved this file in XML hoping to get some insight but found no font reference to the music font being used and my q=qd was shown to be a Times New Roman font. Seems SS64 just assumes anything not legitimately on a staff is text.
Call support unless Mikey has a revelation.

Re: How to indicate tempo change of quarter note = dotted quarter note?
Seems to me that you should be able to insert a tempo mark where you want this to happen. Not sure if you want to go faster or slower. But from the original tempo (e.g. Q=90) if you want to go 50% faster, change tempo to Q=135 (which equals 90 x 1.5). And if you want to go slower, change tempo to Q=60 (which equals 90 / 1.5).

The way I read his problem it was not getting the tempo to change as you indicated but wanting to notate on the score that a quarter equals a dotted quarter using the note symbols.

Yes, as an example, if we change the time signature from 4/4 time, which has 4 beats per measure, to 12/8 compound time, which has 4 major beats per measure (and 3 minor beats per major beat), then the notation the OP has asked for would indicate that the music should continue on with the same number of (major) beats per minute.
