Effective scanning with a digital buggy whip

Today I downloaded the trial version of SmartScoreX2 Piano for Mac, on the recommendation of a review featuring this comment: "Smartscore is considered the most effective musical OCR/editor on the market. Often Smartscore is cited as having the world’s most accurate music-scanning engine at its core."

I've worked with the software for a few hours, and although the scan from my PDF of sheet music is largely without error, there are a few sections that defy modification. Finale probably can handle those recalcitrants.

But I was struck by the clunky, Windoze 95-like interface. Surely the designers have been exposed to the sexy look-and-feel of Apple's products of the 21st century. Yet with SmartScore X2, users are dragged back to the digital Dark Ages.

The programs's user interface will probably not succeed in preventing me from purchasing a license. But I suspect the makers of the program would enjoy significantly higher sales if the interface were modernized...unless the imposition of an obsolete design on users of an otherwise capable program is intentional.

We're waiting for SmartScore 64, which promises "a streamlined new look, a smarter interface, and, of course, improved recognition."

Maybe that will be more to your liking.

Meanwhile, what are the problems that you can't solve?
