SSPro vs Music-to-XML and Logic Studio X

Hi all,

I just got the scores for the Minnesota Oratorio Society's upcoming concert and I'm trying to get them into Logic Studio X (my DAW of choice). In the past I've used NotateMe to convert printed music to midi, but it really made a hash of this set of scores.

I downloaded the demo for SmartScore Pro and it did a much, much better job of interpreting the scanned music. Really very impressive.

However, I'd rather do my fixing in Logic's Score editor, since I already know that program. I'm not crazy about having to learn another score editor with a steep learning curve, and I already have all the VST instruments that I could possibly need for playback.

The demo program won't let you export to MusicXML or Midi (reasonable, I suppose, but as per below, it prevents me from testing the most essential (for me) functionality). I was/am frankly a bit loath to spend $300 (with the Logic crossgrade) for software when I don't plan on using any but a bit of the functionality, but I'd do it if it enabled me to easily get these scores loaded up. If it saves me a bunch of hours, it's worth the cost.

Then I saw that Musitek has released an OSX app "Music-to-XML" that is supposed to use the same recognition engine as SmartScore Pro. "Aha!", thinks I, "The perfect solution". So I ponied up the $100 for Music-to-XML, converted the first score (Tannhauser excerpt) and imported it into Logic. I was seriously disappointed with the result. It is no where near as good as the conversion that I saw with the SSPro demo. Pretty much a waste of $100.

If the recognition engine is really the same, then the problem could be Logic's ability to import and interpret MusicXML files. I know it does okay with midi files, but I haven't imported complex scores in MusicXML format in the past. Or the problem could be that Music-to-XML isn't actually doing the same conversion that SSPro is doing. Without the ability to test the MusicXML and Midi export/import functions in SSPro, I have no way of knowing.

A question while I'm thinking of it - when you export a score with many voices from SSPro in midi format, does it create one midi file per voice or does it assign a different midi channel per voice in one file? Music-to-XML generates one .xml file with all the voices.

So, before I potentially waste another $300, does anyone have experience with SSPro and Logic Studio X and Music XML files and/or Midi files? If so, are the imported scores in Logic as good as the ones in SSPro?

This is a long shot, and it's a lot to ask, but would anyone be willing to take my scanned score (or even just the first couple pages), run it through SSPro and export both the resulting MusicXML and Midi files and send them back to me as a test? I've got about 150 pages of opera scores that I really need to get loaded into a DAW.

Thanks,
Tom

Sure, I’ll do it. Send a couple of PDFs to wawoodman at aol dot com.

To use SmartScore effectively, you really have to commit to the learning cove. The reason you want Pro, rather than Music to XML, is that you can edit the recognized scan, and many things are easier to do in SmartScore.
