Can't Save To MXL
HI, I'm a newbie here. I scanned a score and it scanned fine, but when I go to save as an MXL a window opens and it's telling me to save as TIFF and I can't seem to change that. I want to open this score in my Sibelius program and the manual is saying I can when it's saved as an MXL file.
Thanks.

Re: Can't Save To MXL
You are right about the Demo version not saving files, XML or other notation.
However, you may be slightly ahead of yourself. The save as TIFF option comes up after the file is scanned but not after the Recognition stage. In other words, you can save the scanned image but that file has no knowledge about the "music" in the scan - it is just a bunch of bitmapped dots.
You need to do the Recognition process which converts the information in the scan into the music's notes, rests, key sig, etc. and this is where you will see just how good the result is. It will never be perfect but it can be pretty darn good if the original is clean.
After the Recognition and any editing you do then the file is saved normally as an ENF which is Smartscore's native notation format. Also at that stage you can save as XML but you can't do these saves in the Demo.
Although it is another program to learn you are much better off editing the scan errors within Smartscore since it's interface is made for scan corrections. Programs like Sibelius and Finale etc expect the notes to be entered "manually" into their structure and often get confused if an uncorrected scan is imported and editing the problem can be awkward. Time errors (too many/few beats in a bar) wrong time sig, repeats and any similar structure errors should be fixed first. Wrong notes, accidentals etc aren't a problem. Lyrics are often not worth importing and this can be turned off in the program's options along with all text.

Re: Can't Save To MXL
Welcome to the world of SSX.
I'll just add a couple of additional comments to build upon Zoots' right-on advice.
As he notes getting a "clean score scan" is very, very important. One critical aspect of my workflow involves first openning the scanned image file in the SSX Image Editor. Then, unless the scan is absolutely "square" in there I first do the Deskew function. This one step has been the most useful "trick" I ever found.
But then, I also browse through the image and "erase" any superfluous marks, blobs, page numbers, crease marks, punch hole outlines, etc, that is any image content that's not an actual part of the score. Also, as Zoots opines, depending on what you are doing with the recognized score, you may want to elect not to recognize lyrics. SSX is essentially an Optical Character Recognition process and anything you can do to minimize the number of "blobs" of dots on the page, the greater your chances of an error free recognition.
I hope you find your foray into SSX rewarding and elect to join the community.

Re: Can't Save To MXL
Thanks for the reply guys. When I scanned my score it scanned pretty good. That's all I wanted because my main reason for SmartScore is to get my score back into Sibelius because I somehow lost the original score in Sibelius. I have a printed score so, I just scanned it and hoped it would be converted to an XML so I could put it back into Sibelius, but as I found out you can't do that with the demo version. So, I'll probably just buy the Pro version.
