Transfer of voice parts to MIDI

I am making 'practice files' for my choir. SSX set up for SATB (4 staves) and piano (2 staves). When converted to MIDI, the piano part is fine, but there are NO voice parts on the MIDI file. I have several other files which transfer OK, but this particular file does not transfer the voice parts to MIDI. I have looked extensively for any differences in the playback console and several other places in various files, but can find no differences which could account for this problem. I suspect I have unwittingly engaged SOME control which is causing this, but I'm d--ned if I can find it.

Re: Transfer of voice parts to MIDI

It's a bit late here after a long day with the grandkids and a nearly 2 hour drive home, but your use case is so very similar to my typical one until lately except in my case there were only two vocal part staves SA and TB, that I couldn't resist the urge to jump in.

I might say that providing some basic info about your computer setup (platform, OS, etc) and SmartScore installation (edition, eg Pro, Piano, etc--though I presume that you do have the Pro Edition) and version (I'm still using the SSX version, not the SSX2) can be helpful. It's easy to include this info in your forum signature and really helps us out (especially of your on an Apple Platform).

I'm assuming that when you "play" the score, you get both the piano and all of the voice parts. Is that correct? I am also assuming that you are using the "Save As..." dialog to create the midi file; are you saving the file as a Midi Type 0 or Type 1? Also, for playback are you using a GM (general midi) playback device or some other midi player (hardware Synth or VSTi).

Also, how are you determining that the voice parts are not being exported: e.g. opening the resultant .MID files in a midi editor application, or simply trying to play them with a separate player?

It may seem that I'm reaching for straws here, but in a way I am: I used SSX for exactly the same thing you are for a lot of years and haven't encountered this problem, although as I mentioned I'm using the older version, my hardware is antiquated (still running XP) for a few really good reasons. What you're doing is what I believe was one of the things this software was created to do. I want you to succeed.

As much as I'd like to help, perhaps your best bet is to open a support request directly with Musitek--the don't often monitor the forum, but do try to respond to direct support requests. Send an email describing the problem with as much detail as possible about your setup and the steps you've taken and options you've selected to

[email protected]

Attach a copy of your .ENF file to the email.

Re: Transfer of voice parts to MIDI

Thanks for your reply. I will try to answer your questions, even if just to prepare an email to Musitek support. I have been using SSX, and now SSX2 (PRO edition), for several years, often for this purpose. The object of making a MIDI file is so that I can play it on the keyboard 'appliance' at rehearsal. This is a Yamaha Clavinova 701, and it accepts both MIDI0 and MIDI1 inputs. I have tried both types, and there is no difference. We use this keyboard since we do not have a pianist capable of some of our accompaniments, and to help the choir out in the first couple of rehearsals. I don't play well enough to be of much use in this respect.

The MIDI file plays the piano part OK, but the voice parts are completely absent. I am using the basic MIDI set of instruments, and have tried changing the selection from "voice oohs" to "trumpet" with no difference in the result. It doesn't matter whether I play it through the Yamaha keyboard or on the media player on the computer. (OS=windows seven). The parts play just fine with SSX in playback mode, but when 'saved as' MIDI (either 0 or 1), the voice parts are simply absent.

The really frustrating part is that I have created four other files over the past week or so, and have had no problem with any of them. I have been doing exactly the same process for some years and never had this problem before.
