No Sound Through Aria

Hello,

I have recently upgraded to SmartScore X2 Pro (from SmartScore Lite that came with Finale PrintMusic). I can't get any sound when playing back through Aria. I see the notes light up but no sound. I do get sound when I playback through Internal Playback. I have seen other threads with similar issues but nothing I do seems to work.

When I upgraded, I did so by download, so I do not have SmartScore CD/DVD. When I downloaded Pro there was a message saying "Garritan and Aria installers predate OS 12 (Sierra) enhanced security features. It is possible that SmartScore X2 WITH garritan Sounds installer may fail to install completely. If so, return to this download page and download SmartScore X2 WITHOUT Garritan Sounds."

Sure enough, SmartScore with Garritan wouldn't install so I installed the version without Garritan. Musitek then told me how to install Garritan and Aria, which I did. One thing I noticed was that when I downloaded X2 Pro with Garritan (that wouldn't install) it was a massive file but when I downloaded everything separately they were all much smaller files and their sizes wouldn't add up to the all-in-one file size. Not sure if that's relevant.

When I select audio Units as the Midi Device and Aria Player opens I have then loaded instruments (using one of the Ensembles). Channels in Playback Console have instruments loaded in Aria and I have increased the volume sliders in the Aria mixer.

I have tried changing everything I can find to get sound but no luck so far.

A couple of observations:
1. With Aria selected, the instruments in the Playback Console are still active, even though the manual says they won't be.
2. When I playback through Internal Playback the top left corner of the Playback Console shows midi port A. When I switch to Aria, it shows midi port B. Again, not sure if that's relevant.

Any tips, ticks or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks,

David

David,
I would send that in to tech support. They've been pretty good in responding to emails, where they might not see (or admit to seeing) a post in the forum.

I sent an email to tech support but they are unable to help. They say that if I successfully loaded instruments from the Ensembles section and Aria volumes are maxed and I still hear nothing, the problem is isolated to something in my machine's configuration. I will continue trying to find the problem but if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.

Totally off the wall thought and one that caused no sound on various apps, not necessarily SS. This was an issue on Windows at least at some time in the past and that was if some other app grabbed the sound system then a subsequent application would not produce sound.

FWIW

I don't understand why it would only be Aria where there is no sound. I can switch back and forward between Internal Playback and Aria and there is always sound on Internal Playback. And every other application I have that requires sound is OK. It's just Aria. There is also an Aria forum. I will try that too.

David

I'm curious: Did you ever get this issue resolved?

There are several reasons I didn't jump into the discussion back when you raised it, not the least of which are the facts that I am a Windows user so have no current experience with Mac OSs and architecture, and that I never upgraded to SSX2 so I don't have the Aria player. But I do have a fair number of pro audio applications, including VST and other software and hardware synths.

I was a bit taken aback about your statement that Tech Support had been unable to help, as well as the rather sparse discussion regarding the setup of the Aria player in SSX. One thing I've noticed during discussions of issues regarding audio output from SSX is misunderstandings of what's taking place. SSX itself does not produce audio output: its "output" is a stream of midi data. MIDI is musical performance data, defining the instrument(s) and note pitches and durations. This data must then be "performed" using some sort of midi synthesizer, either hardware or software. The Aria Player is a sample-based software synthesizer. So the setup involves making one (or more) midi connections from SSX to the synth, as well as a digital audio connection from the synth to your workstation's sound card or audio device. That's where your Operating System often gets involved. When you switch to "internal playback" you are using a midi device within your workstation with an internal connection to the audio device.

Perhaps you already knew all of that, but since there was little discussion about what steps you'd been advised to take, and the fact that often we've had discussions on this forum (as well as that for my music notation application as these have exactly the same situation for playback) clarifying this distinction. My initial thought was that something was amiss with the setup of SSX's midi output to the Aria Player's midi input or with the digital audio connection from the Aria player output to the workstation's audio device. Without knowledge of the Aria Player, it could be something as simple as having a "Mute" button pressed in the Aria Player mixer section (if it has one). So if you hadn't known about this before, perhaps you now can try to trace those two signal paths through your particular system.

Re: No Sound Through Aria

Hi. No, this hasn't been resolved, so thanks for diving back in.

And thanks for the overview of how these things work. I kind of knew bits of it but not all and this is certainly not an area in which I would consider myself knowledgeable - which is probably why I haven't been able to resolve it.

I have two "midi devices", which are Internal Playback (port A) and Audio Units (port B). When I select Audio Units the Aria Player opens.

I understand that Aria is a plug-in. I haven't loaded any other audio plug-ins that I know of (unless one came built into Finale PrintMusic) or soundcards or other audio drivers/devices. I guess this means that Internal Playback (which works) is whatever was built into my ageing (late 2009) iMac.

There is a IAC (Inter-application communication) Driver in Mac OS that is checked as "device is online". I can see port A and port B each with one input and one output.

The Aria Player does not have a "master" mute that I can see. Each channel has an individual mute button. I have tried switching these on and off. Similarly, each channel has a solo button and I have tried playing with these too.

I will keep searching for the problem. I have also posted it on the Plogue Aria Engine forum. Hopefully that will help.

David,

I sent you a PM with some perhaps esoteric observations.

David,
I can't help with the Aria issue, sorry.

Are you aware that PrintMusic will not work with the upcoming Mac OS update, to High Sierra?

MM has also announced that PrintMusic and NotePad will not be updated in the future.

You can read about it here: https://www.finalemusic.com/blog/finale-smartmusic-macos-high-sierra/

Take advantage of the offer to upgrade to the full Finale for $99, til the end of September!

Thanks for the heads-up. I wasn't aware of the High Sierra or the $99 upgrade offer. I'll be upgrading.
