Trying to scan and recognize handwritten score

Hi All,

I'm trying to help a friend who has a handwritten score. I've tried using the recommended workflow, but the recognition level is almost limited to finding the barlines, and a few notes here and there.

I also tried converting the PDF of the score to a higher resolution TIF (tried 400dpi and 600dpi, but they cause SSX2 Pro to crash)

I also found that after converting the PDF to TIF, the darker/lighter tool seemed to have trouble... I would increase the darkness, and click preview, but the display remained unchanged (no darker)

Any thoughts on a workflow for handwritten scores that I could try?

Thank you!

Re: Trying to scan and recognize handwritten score

My recommendation is that you start entering the notation manually and while SS can do that its mouse entry is rather tedious (IMO).

The recognition success of SmartScore and others is very highly dependent on the quality of the original and a handwritten score won't work unless it is exceptional. I had what I considered to be a pretty good simple handwritten score of mostly 1/4 and 1/2 notes neatly done in black ink. It wasn't good enough for scanning.

From the SS FAQ:
SmartScore may recognize lead sheets or hand-written scores provided the notation approximates offset printed sheet music. But we can not guarantee the kind of accuracy you would obtain with printed sheet music. The closer the manuscript resembles printed music, the better the recognition will be.

Agreed. Scanning handwritten scores is a waste of time. It just ain't gonna happen.

Buy Finale (or Sibelius, or Dorico, or MuseScore,) and learn to use them.
