Is there a product for me?

I lead Sing Alongs at Senior Centers. Mostly popular tunes from the 30s to the 60s. It would be real nice to use a software to scan fake sheets and transpose to different key. Please make suggestions.

If you haven't seen it, here is a comparison of the various SmartScore versions. The most limited one is the MIDI version and it won't do what you want at all.

http://www.musitek.com/compare.html

The major, but not only, difference in the other versions is the number of staffs it will do. The Piano Edition is limited to 2 staffs which means that you can do the Right-Hand and Left-Hand parts but no more. So if you had 3rd staff for say, melody, it wouldn't work.

The other limitation you probably have is that only the top 2 products the Pro and the Songbook handle lyrics.

Scanning is certainly not perfect and the result is highly dependent on the quality of the original. If you have a score that has been photocopied several times the recognition errors increase. Handwritten scores are for the most part useless and I have never had good luck with anything written in the jazz font no matter how clean the copy was.

The only way you can see how it works for you is to try a free demo. You can't save the work but you will see how well the scanning recognition goes and how easy it is to correct it.

SmartScore does allow you to enter a score from scratch but it is done using the mouse and clicking the suitable notes in the right place on the staff. This is very tedious. On the bright side, its interface is optimized quite well for correcting scan recognition errors and once you learn the basics you can correct most notation errors fairly quick.

I don't work with lyrics but SmartScore does have lyric capability but from comments I've read lyrics seem to be an area that can be problematic but it probably depends on just how complex the lyrics are.

I don't know if you just want a scanning program and then would import the music notation file produced into another program. Some people use SmartScore Pro to do the scan and recognition, fix up most errors and then take the musicXML file output option and import it into a more sophisticated program such as Finale for finishing. Usually these people are better versed in the other program and can make a nicer output with less head-scratching.
