Can you briefly describe the solution so we can all learn from it?

Re: Staves

"This file can not be recognized. This version of Smart Score recognizes scores with up to x number of staves per system."

This message applies to all SmartScore editions EXCEPT the Pro version. This is because all editions (but Pro) have limitations on the number of parts (staves) per system that particular edition can process:

Guitar: 1 staff per system
Piano: 2 staves per system
MIDI: 4 staves per system
Songbook: 3 staves per system

If you feel your score is within these ranges and you still get the error, it is highly likely there was a light leak along the left edge of the score when it was scanned... causing a large black mass to impinge on the left edges of two or more systems.
