A PDF has both music notation and tablature - how to get MUS to recognize correctly

I have a song in PDF format. I contains both music notation and tablature. Is there a help doc on how to config MUS. I've attempted all the possible settings using the instructions from the user manual and no luck. thx.

Barry,

Welcome to the forum. I am a bit confused with your references to "MUS":I assume however your using it as short for Musitek, and that you are actually using one of the SmartScore editions--which one would that be? Each has some different limitations.

EDIT: It just struck me that MUS is a Finale file format which is the output when you attempt to convert the SSX ENF for use in Finale. I only have the older original SSX version that only used Music XML for transfers, and I don't have Finale, and thus have never used that, so apologies for missing that. But from what I understand is that you first recognize the score, correct the recognition errors in SSX, then use the File menu command which saves the ENF and MUS files, launches Finale and opens the MUS for editing in that application. I could be wrong, but I think you still have to get the major structural/timing errors corrected in SSX first.

I'll start by stating right up front that I've never used TAB, so pardon me if I stumble a bit.

When you say your score has both notation and TAB, are they two representations of the same part in different formats, or is it something like a notation staff with the melody line(s) and a TAB staff for the guitar, bass, banjo, or ???. If so, are the different types of staves grouped as systems (staff of notation over a staff of notation over a staff of TAB, or separately just on the same page? If they are separate parts arranged in systems, then hopefully when you open the PDF, SSX should first convert it to a TIF file. When you then attempt to Recognize that file, you should see the "Begin Recognition" dialog. Select the Options tab. There are several choices there as to what you want SSX to convert. Select the one's that have corresponding elements in the score (don't waste resources looking for things that aren't there) and that you want represented in the SSX ENF file--eg, you might not want chord symbols. The one you HAVE to check to recognize TAB is "Recognize tablature, percussion and/or split systems (coda phrases)".

The best printed help can be found in the very worthwhile "Using SmartScoreX" PDF manual, which can be downloaded right from the Help menu. There's a lot of terminology, and a number of fundamental concepts that are often confusing to new users. Hang in there, you'll get it with some practice.

thanks for a quick reply. I'm very sorry but i confused the issue by quoting the incorrect name of the program. I was reading another subsriber's post re MUS and got that prg name in my head when creating the new post. So I should have said "Smart Score X Midi". Anyways, both music and tab stabs are on one page. I can send you an example of the page I'm referring to if that helps. pls let me know. .. I'm also considering purchasing Smart Score Guitar version.. thanks

No problem with the confusion. The fundamental issue is that the Midi Edition does not support recognition of percussion and TAB staves.

This link to the Musitek site takes you to a comparison of the features for each of the editions.

The Guitar has some pretty severe limitations as well. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
