PDF to MUS?

I had a hard drive crash and now have to recreate a bunch of Finale .mus files. Fortunately, I have the PDFs that Finale created from them.

SmartScore looks promising, but before I invest the money, I need to know whether I'll get the original document back -- same font, same chord style, lyrics associated with the same note.

Here is a sample of my music: https://app.box.com/s/db7wpmz8uw1w96l481278fdpj625uizz

Let me know what you think my chances of getting the original back are, and how much work would be required.

Thanks,
Fred

Re: PDF to MUS?

What, no backup!!!!

I ran your posted file through SmartScore X2 Pro (SS) and it did a pretty good job. However, SS is a program that works with scanned images so the data in PDF is converted to a TIF file and then the normal recognition process is performed.

Since the copy is very clean and a good size the recognition was very good although not perfect. There were no rhythmic errors, and a quick glance indicates the notes are fine but I didn't look carefully.

The tempo mark would need to be fixed,
the title font was close but not exact,
I turned off the fingerboard display for the chords but a minor shows a "min" no just "m",
Ending bar-line needs changing to the typical final bar line.
The lyrics were very good but did have the odd spelling mistake and a bit of spacing adjustment is needed but not too much. I don't work with lyrics so I can't say how hard this would be but all of the above is very easily correctable.

I then ran your file through the demo version of PDFtoMusic Pro. This program interprets the embedded data directly without converting it to a scan. It can therefore deal directly with music written by notation programs (but can't deal with any embedded graphical music like SS can).
PDRtoMusic Pro said that there was no embedded font data for Arial MT and Arial MT bold. It just substitutes what it thinks is close.

The result for page was excellent so for this type of PDF file and the posted file example it is the better option.

Note that the demo of PDFtoMusic Pro will let you process only one page at a time. Both programs are not cheap. If cost is issue and you want to use them and your files are only 1 stave as posted or up to I think 3 you may get by with a cheaper version of SS than the Pro. Apart from the MIDI and perhaps guitar version the main difference is the number of staves they will handle.
I don't know what options exist for PDFtoMusic Pro.

Suggest you try the demo version(s)but you aren't dead in the water but a bit of work will be required.

Re: PDF to MUS?

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I've already been admonished by my wife for the lack of a backup.

The Songbook version of SmartScore is what would work best for me. And, as I own Finale 2011, I qualify for the $99 upgrade price.

However, why I try to order it, there is no download option. As I'm in Canada, I would be hit with shipping fees and the inevitable hassle with customs at the border.

Is there any way I can just download the program? Surely it's cheaper for Musitek to let me download it than ship me a DVD.

Thanks,
Fred

You might want to look at PDF to Music Pro. This was specifically developed to read PDFs generated directly from musc notation programs, which yours, were.

Not inexpensive, but it should do it. A demo is available, which only does a single page at a time.

Re: PDF to MUS?

I'm in Canada and can get the Songbook upgrade by going to the Musitek site and selecting Upgrade - Competitive Upgrade. You enter your Finale serial number in the comments section and you can also tell them no DVD version is desired, download only.

However the prices are higher and Songbook is $149 not $99, presumably US$. I recall seeing $99 previously but can't remember where or when. Trying to go through my version of Finale 2012, if the upgrade reference was there, doesn't work since it already knows I have the SS Pro installed.

You've probably seen mikey12045's advice and it does agree with my test results.
