Count marks in measure for guitar players?
I don't even know how to ask an intelligent question here, but...
Often in the music I see there are diagonal forward slash marks in a measure corresponding to the quarter note (or whatever beat) count. There are no notes but these indicators serve to help musicians play through a non-vocal portion of a song.
What are these called? Is there a function in Smartscore that addresses this?
Thanks, all!

Re: Count marks in measure for guitar players?
pastor chuck,
I think they're called "beat slashes". I also believe there are also "rhythm slashes" which are a similar symbol, perhaps a bit smaller with stems and flags indicating durations of part of a beat.
I don't know for sure, but I do not believe SSX addresses these at all. In fact, my notation software doesn't either as far as I know. You might be able to come up with something similar using a percussion staff, but that's another thing I've never really had to deal with (percussion notation, that is).
I remember seeing a lot of them in my early days playing guitar, especially for folk songs.
Probably not much help, but maybe a little more than you had before. Maybe a support inquiry ([email protected]) might turn up something.

Re: Count marks in measure for guitar players?
tlwebb is correct. The slash notation is aligned with the beats and is an indication of the beats in the bar. The musician can do whatever he wants as far as rhythm with the designated chords.
In the somewhat similar rhythmic notation the actual rhythm of the chords is specified.
Some time ago I tried to recognize such a score with no luck and there is no mention of slash notation in the manual.
You could try setting up a text style that is suitably large and bold and then just put in text forward slashes in the staff.

Re: Count marks in measure for guitar players?
Thanks guys. I suspected that was the case. Not concerned for myself as much as the occasional piano picker who would be frustrated by a 4/4 measure with a half note and nothing more. My chief use of SS is to transpose for church worship. I just didn't want to miss out on something if there was an easy fix. I do like the notion to create a text style for that (tho SS won't address that in playing back.)

Re: Count marks in measure for guitar players?
Almost any "real" notation program could handle this. If you are using SSP to create scores from scratch, you might find that a different program would give you more features.
Remember that SSP is designed primarily as a scanning program.
That being said, it would be nice if SSP would allow entering things like slash notation or x-noteheads, even if it didn't recognize them in a scan.

Re: Count marks in measure for guitar players?
SSX does support various "percussion" style noteheads (X, open/filled triangle and open/filled diamond, and maybe more. Simply activate the "Properties" tool and click on a note. The options are available under the "Note head type" drop-down control.

Thanks for that! I continue to learn more about the program!
