Just read about voice-splitting.

Re: Working with SATB Scores in SA-TB-Piano Format

I think it would be really great if SmartScore gave an option to automatically split a bar upon recognition, and in that case to always put the black note on top.

I spend an awful lot of time dealing with SA-TB scores, and though I am really good at splitting I hate the following 'features':

1. It consistently drops expression for the bottom notes after a split (e.g. staccato, etc).

2. It is inconsistent about which note gets put on top (see comment above). It also randomly assigns rests to the red notes. Love that it is more tolerant of missing rests in the red notes, by the way.

With the option to select a score as SA-TB Piano, I would think that would make it way easier for the recognition engine and would certainly save me a lot of hours.

I also split a lot of voices in the work I do. I found that the rests must be duplicated for each voice and most of the time the voices will then line up with 1st voice on top. I have requested that the single notes and rests be duplicated and split when selecting measures to split voices

Yes Yes Yes.

SmartScore is really not smart when splitting notes. It will correctly handle rests if the rests that apply to all lines are made black, but as was pointed out it doesn't assign them to black as the default!

What is even more frustrating is that it doesn't retain any attributes of the note cluster to the split notes - no articulation, no dynamics, and not even 3rds! Thirds are basic to the note's timing, yet after splitting you have to go back and assign everything to the individual notes.

All attributes of the cluster should apply to the notes after the split.

Correction to my last post - it is early!

I said 3rds and meant triplets!

As I've said before: SSP is really designed for recognizing scores, and doing some editing, which it does very well. Its purpose is not doing everything that one might want.

I recognize the scores, clean them up, and export as XML. Then, I go to Finale for my "heavy duty" work, splitting staves for SATB learning tracks. The plugin JW Staff Polyphony makes it easy. (Keep in mind that the plugins don't work, yet, in the newest Finale version. I'm still using 2014.5.)
