measure stretched too long, creates unnecessarily long score

After reformatting the enf I find that I have single measures stretched the width of the page, when the original has 2 measures. This is not universal, but may occur in sections where there is a vocal note held for several beats (best I can tell). This adds extra pages to the score and I want to avoid that. Any ideas??

Thanks, Chuck Barnett, Arlington, WA

Chuck

Please help me understand better when this is happening. When you say "...after reformatting the enf..." do you mean that you have gone through the recognition process, and corrected any errors, then you do something to change the page layout or something (such as use the "Edit->Format Score" command) and this results in the wide single measures? Or is this happening as part of the recognition process?

I am sad the original poster did not reply to continue this thread: For me; I have done a couple of measure "inserts" copied from a second score onto the one I am working on, and 2 of the measures are basically the entire width of the page. "Nudge" only moves notes around and not measure bars. The auto-spacing function does not seem to change any of this. Is there any way to get these wide measures to be a "normal" width?

You can move measure bars with the nudge tool; the handle is right on the barline.

While SmartScore is a wonderful program for scanning, it is NOT a full featured notation application. Finale, Sibelius, Dorico, or MuseScore will give you much more freedom.

Well, just hold down shift or something, which makes the measure handles visible, and grab the measure handle to make it shorter. (Keep in mind that the measure which comes after the one you're trying to shorten has to be short enough to fit on the same page, otherwise trying to shorten a measure will probably have no effect.)

I almost never use the nudge tool, since holding down shift (MacOS) does the same thing.

Also you can temporarily add measure bars to compress or stretch out groups of notes, and then in the end delete these measure bars. I did this alot to correct certain recognition flaws.

Oh, and also use "Long view" when you want to adjust the width of your measures.

I thought the shift key WAS the nudge tool. Is there another one?

If you lengthen or shorten a measure in long view, does it stay that way when you go back to page view?

Yeah, I guess holding down shift is the same as nudge. But nudge also appears as its own tool in the palettes, so you can use that instead of holding down shift.

Long view, dunno. My guess it it depends on how they fit on the page, similarly as when you try to shrink the last measure on the page/system, and the measure which comes is too long to fit the same page/system, and then your measure will just snap back to its original lenght as if you never had touched it.
