Lyrics issue

Hi, I'm really new to SmartScore (just a couple of weeks now), using SSXPro v10.1.0 on XPproSP1. Scanned a single sheet tune, single staff with 5 verses. No special endings, except the last line of every verse is exactly the same and printed as one line.

For some reason, the lyrics seem to be associated with the system BELOW the lines of lyrics. Except for the last system, which seems to be associated with the 5 lines above the staff and the 1 below. When I try to use the lyrics tool, the "text" (for want of a better description) turns dark, but the cursor appears UNDER the staff, which is where I would expect it to be. I was ready to retype the lyrics (it's short after all) where they belong. But I can't figure out how to get rid of the ones that are there--short of deleting them from the image file and re-recognizing the result. They definitely appear to be recognized as "lyrics", not text. Even on the last system, I don't seem to be able to edit even the line below the staff. Am I missing something?

I'll do the brute force method to make this work, but I'd like to figure out 1)why this happened, and 2) how to fix it when it does.

Thanks
tlwebb

PS Not real familiar with fora(?)/forums(?) either. Is there something that explains all the "choices" at the top/bottom of the message entry area?

If you emails us the TIFF and ENF files, we'll be able to assess this for you.

Thanks for the reply. Like I said, I'm new to this. Where should I email the files, to the Musitek site tech support address ([email protected]), or someplace associated with the forum?

Please can you put on the forum what the answer was to this problem please
so myself and other future users can know the solution?

I use smartscore a lot with songs which have 2 verses under the music and the rest in numbered verses at the end of the music laid out like poetry. Smart score always does a great job with the lyrics running under the music, but does very badly with the lyrics at the end even if, BEFORE recognition the "recognise lyrics outside systems" box is ticked. It always tries to link words to the last line of the music, which is totally irrelevant and messes up the words completely. I've tried all sorts of scanning resolutions, scanners and ticking hymns as well. Nothing works. It may for example miss two words link one word in the verse to the second to last rest of the music and then miss out more words and then put a word with the last note in the piece. How can this be overcome? I've read and read the instructions and cannot find the answer.

Wot no answer even after 19 days? Not much point in posting if there's no reply. Please can you put the answer down for everyone.

Lyrics being all over the place even if you do before recognition select "lyrics outside staves" is really not even an irritating thing its inconvenient to say the least. emoticon emoticon

Did you send your TIFF files to [email protected]? They are usually very good in replying to submitted problem files.

Re: Lyrics issue

If they are lyriucs they will be blue. If they are text, they will be black. What appears to be happening is that SmartScore is associating the lyrics with the line of music above the lyrics (which is usually the piano left hand). This can happen with the piano right hand too, when it recognizes expression marks as lyrics and displays them in blue. Click on the notes above the lyrics and you will be able to delete these. Smartscore has an option to "recognize lyrics outside of systems" on the "Options" tab of the recognition dialogue box. I have never used it so I don't know whether it would help in this case.

Re: Lyrics issue

dvd3, karl, and the world,

thanks for the replies, I'd really forgotten about this topic. I was truly a beginner at that point. I was also trying to learn SSXPro, a new version of my notation software, and a new DAW software app, AS WELL AS solving some hardware issues that had arisen with the music-only workstation I'd assembled specifically to run it all. Oh, and my "day job". I'd PM'd basset1 after his last post, basically to admit that I really didn't know what I was doing and didn't want to admit it on-line. He/she was very supportive and we had a nice chat. But I'm a more "mature" forum user now, and when I saw the topic resurect, thought I'd at least offer some closure for others with possibly similar issues. And some advice to "new" users of the forum: Don't be embarrased, especially about admitting mistakes. That was part of my problem from the old BB days. It often takes a while for someone who might have a suggestion to see your issue. Not sure how often the techs check in here, but I've been following myself a lot more recently when time allows, and this is really a pretty friendly place. Folks don't get flamed here, at least not that I've noticed. This is somewhat complicated software, as are all OCR aps in my experience, with lots of variables, and with all the different practices and house styles of music publishing houses these days, none of us see how it works with even a fraction of those variables. So we're all "beginners" with some aspects, even after using it for a good while, and most of us here seem to be willing to at least make a suggestion or two even if we're not really sure it will help.

So, to end the story. I did try sending my file to tech support, but for some reason or another, most probably because I messed something up, I never got a reply. But it really didn't matter at that point, as I'd already done a brute force fix and I was only pursuing this out of curiosity.

I still have frequent issues with recognition in SS, but have gotten much better at resolving the issues. Some things I'm convinced the software just can't handle. I think the structure of this score, with several systems with multiple verses, and then a single, final system with a single lyrics line just didn't fit any normal pattern it could recognize. I may have also had some inappropriate recognition settings, as dvd3 suggests, but since I wasn't even smart enough then to record the settings I'd used, I really couldn't tell.

The software is very capable. But, as with any OCR software, there are limits. And SS is not alone in having problems with playing back scores with various del segno, del capo, codas, and other "repeat" type sections as set by various publishers. My notation software can't even handle many of those. There are also issues with the resulting notation, especially for split voices--I believe someone else has raised this recently in another topic regarding reconstructing "chords"--but now I only use my notation software for printed scores, so that's not my normal usage for SS now.

I'm not sure if this forum (I'm in three others for the other s/w I mentioned) has an "Issue Closed" status, or icon, or whatever, but I sure hope my "non-answer" has helped.

Re: Lyrics issue

I thought it was just me having this problem.

I just sent my TIF and ENF to tech support for some help.

The problem really is that SmartScore isn't seeing the 'lyrics' as lyrics at all. Use the View/show/lyrics toggles and you'll see that as far as SmartScore is concerned, it isn't lyrics, just text.

This IS a very serious issue. If the lyrics won't work, might as well just use the Lite version and save some money.

thanks
Lloyd
