Different voices playing same rhythm

I am trying to have two voices on the same measure playing two different rhythms:

For some reason some of the notes are on the same rhythm (shown in purple) as some are not, which is what I am trying to achieve.

Anyone know how to fix this so everything is white like the 2 middle bars?

Thanks.

I often see this in a scan, when the whole notes aren't recognized as being on beat one, even though it looks like they are. The purple means there is a duration error: The eighth notes are correct, but the whole notes are not on beat one. Imagine there is an invisible 32nd rest, in front to the whole note. Consequently, a overfilled measure, and the duration error.

Easy fix. Delete the whole note. Re-enter it so that the first eighth note turns blue, before you click it in. That blue indicates that you are on the same beat, but in a different voice.

Yep, was wondering what the blue meant. Thanks

mikey nailed the issue, but I'll add a bit. There are four "voices" associated with each staff. The SS concept of "contrapunctual voices" (although that concept is not unique to SSX) is fundamental to using the program effectively, but in some ways not very intuitive.

If you have not already done so, I HIGHLY recommend that you download the ever-so-useful "Using SSX" PDF manual--you can do that right from the HELP menu. In the older version that I've got section 8.9 deals in some detail with this subject. Time well spent to read through that section and play with some of the tools. You'll most likely be encountering them all unless you work exclusively with very simple scores.

Lot's of other neat stuff lurking in the pages of that document too. You can tell I'm a fan.
