Re: How To Scan To Sibelius

Were you able to see the link to the image I posted? Could you open it?

I put my screenshot into my dropbox account, and generated a link. Then, I pasted the link into my post.

Yes, I was able to see your screenshot. I'll try to insert mine too. I see yours and you have the option to go to XML. I don't see that in mine when I hit Recognition. Take a look.https://www.dropbox.com/s/qp7gja08ou51xgx/Screen%20Shot%202018-12-13%20at%204.06.05%20PM.png?dl=0

I'm not trying to interupt the conversation, but he hasn't yet replied and it's Friday: I think that Mikey's shot is probably what appears when you click the "Save As..." entry from the dropdown dialog in your capture, giving you the options for the type of file to generate.

Just an educated guess.

Re: How To Scan To Sibelius

MAJOR COMMENT: You posted in the Music-to-XML forum, so that’s what I assumed you were using. But your screenshot shows SmartScore Pro, which is a whole different kettle of fish!

OK. You haven’t gone far enough. You’ve launched the program, but that’s all.

We’ll assume you’ve scanned the file, and saved it as a PDF, to a folder, or maybe to your desktop. (That’s how I do it on the Mac. With Windows, you may be able to scan directly into the program, but I can’t help with that. So, do it my way, for now!)

Now, in the upper right, click the button that says “Add Files to List...”

Navigate to the PDF, and double-click it to open it in the SmartScore program. The page(s) will show up in that white column in the middle. Then, the button that says Begin Recognition (in the lower right) will become active. Click that. Your scan will be processed. When it’s done, you will be asked to save the file as an .enf, which is the SmartScore format. This is where you do your editing, correcting the inevitable recognition errors. I would do that, and then do a Save As... to get to the next dialogue, where you will save as an XML.

You would also have the opportunity to make some graphic corrections in the Image Editor before the recognition stage, such as deskewing the page, but that’s another topic.

Having said all that, I’m not sure how good your result will be. The page that you show has the staves ‘bent,” because you took a picture with your phone, and you weren’t dead straight on to it. Also, that “handwritten” font may well cause problems. I was working on a piece just today, with a similar font, and the program missed a number of quarter rests.

Finally, I might suggest you work on a much simpler score or two, so you can learn the program before jumping in to a multipart score like that, with transposing instruments and that many staves.

Re: How To Scan To Sibelius

Mikey12045, I'm pretty sure I understand what you're explaining and I appreciate the time you're taking with me.
Let me explain exactly what I would like to do. I had this big band arrangement of Bauble, Bagles & Beads which I created in Sibelius, by the way I use a Mac not windows, I printed the entire arrangement and it's parts out so I could have it played by a big band in the area. I don't know how, but I lost that arrangement in Sibelius. I may have deleted it by accident, all I know is I don't have it anymore in Sibelius. I want it back in Sibelius. That's my goal to put it back into Sibelius not as a pdf, just as a regular Sibelius arrangement so that if I want to edit it and make changes to it or correct it I can do it in Sibelius. That's what my goal is. So, maybe I'm doing this whole thing wrong. I thought with SmartScore I could put it back into Sibelius, again not as a pdf just regular Sibelius. So, with this explanation, am I approaching this correctly using SmartScore?

Re: How To Scan To Sibelius

Yes, that’s the way to go about it. Here is the concept:

You can’t just enter a PDF into Sibelius. (Or Finale, or Dorico, or anything else.) You have to turn it into a file that Sibelius understands.

Sibelius can understand an XML, though, and turn it back into a Sibelius file. SmartScore is a program that will look at the PDF, and by magic, will recognize the musical elements. It then translates that into an XML, which is a text file describing what it sees. Then, Sibelius reads that text file, and puts it back into notation.

If you would like some coaching to help you get started, I will be home for a few hours this afternoon, between about 1:30 and 4, Seattle time. You can give me a call at 206 five two three 9628.
