Looking for a playback voice

I like Piano (in various forms) for four-part choral playback with "part-dominant" files, because it is familiar with what we use at practice, and choral "ahs" are not distinct enough between voices. But as is typical on a piano, a held note fades away after being struck. Is there a playback voice (Instrument) that sounds like Piano but does not fade away? I have tried them all (there are a lot) and didn't find a distinctive one I thought would work well, but I'm open to suggestions.

The piano sound is percussive action on a string and that's what give is the piano sound characteristics. So I don't think there is anything that sounds like a piano but plays more like an organ or violin if I interpret your desire correctly.

You can try to get the most out of the piano by using the Ped on mark in the Text and Tools palette at the beginning of the part(s).

You could also try putting tenuto marks over all the notes and checking the properties for a note with a tenuto over it will allow you to increase the duration (it says). The pedal and the tenuto effect may not add for more duration because the pedal probably does the same thing as a tenuto to some extent at least.

Re: Looking for a playback voice

If I'm generating a learning track with sustained ahs or ohs, I'll switch to an organ. Yes, it sounds nothing like a piano but I hope the singers understand what is meant. Then, I go back to piano for the rest of their notes.

And before you ask, no, I don't know how to do that in SSP. I do that sort of thing in Finale.

I don't know that I've actually ever done this, but the basic process would involve using the midi editor. With your ENF file open, open a new midi view (menu item View-> New Midi View... or Ctl-I). In the resulting dialog you can choose the type of midi view. What you eventually want is the Event List, but you may want to start with one of the others to find the spot you where you want to change the patch--find the midi event in the track and voice right before where you want the patch to change and select it; it will remain selected when you then switch to the event list view.

If you haven't already selected the event BEFORE where you want the change, select it in the event list and press the "New" button at the top of the listing window. From the drop down you can choose what type of event you want to add, which in this case is a Program Change. You have to add a ProgramChange for each part {staff/track) and each voice in the "track" you want changed. You will also have to add ProgramChange commands to switch back to the original patch (piano in this case) if you want it back. This is low level editing.

There is a write-up about this in the most helpful PDF manual "Using SmartScoreX" (downloadable and accessible from the Help menu) in the "Midi Editing and Sequencing" section under the heading "Inserting Non-Note Events" -- in my older SSX (not SSX2) version it's section 10.5.4, it might be different in the latest version.

If you want try this approach and it doesn't work out for you, post back and I'll try to be a bit more specific.

RE: the original question, I was thinking the same as ZootS' tentuto suggestion, but you have to add them to every note individually I believe. You can change the length of time the note's duration is extended (either individually or collectively) using the Properies tool (the Arrowhead button on the SmartScore Toolbar) or quick-key ESC. I don't think you can hide the accent marks separately from the notes (i.e. add just the tenuto in Hidden mode), so the marks could be confusing if you print the ENF score--especially if there are real tenuto notes in the score.

With the Ped marks, you'd have to add pedalUp marks after each note or the notes would sound continuously. Sounds a lot more time consuming to me.
